In the course of my paid work; as the Trust Manager of a small charity that takes ownership of historically important Welsh Chapels, I spend a lot of time in Welsh chapels across Wales.
I do not ordinarily paint them but i was at Hen Dŷ Cwrdd ( Old Meeting House) in Trecynon, cleaning the chapel for a Christmas event, a fundraiser for the National Eisteddfod in Rhondda Cynon Taf 2024, we were entertained by a visit from the ‘ Y Fari Lwyd‘.
Hen Dŷ Cwrdd, Trecynon, is the oldest Nonconformist chapel in the Cynon Valley, in south Wales, it has the most amazing history going back to the 1650’s.
During my efforts to clean, I noticed a very surprising light outside, shocking pink sky in Trecynon!, in fact it appeared that across Wales, we were exposed to a rare but normal, apparently!, phenomenon!
Derek Brockway: “Due to the low angle of the sun’s rays at sunset, pink wavelengths light up the bottom of the cloud. These pink clouds are superimposed on a dark blue sky. The combination of pink and dark blue can make the sky look purple.”
I couldn’t resist painting this, oil on board, with a reclaimed frame which i gilded with 21ct gold leaf- a bit of shabby chic! which is now at home in Sir Ddinbych!
I hope you like it!
